Prevention
of Dental Disease
Preventive dentistry
is also a high priority for us, and this includes a dietary
analysis to identify the factors that may be encouraging
tooth decay so that we can help you eliminate these. Fissure
sealants and tooth brushing & mouthwash advice is
also available to protect the teeth & gums.
Our hygienist is specially trained in being able to advise
you on the best way to achieving oral health and will
cater her advice to YOUR specific needs. Many treatments
we do here will depend on the ability to achieve a good
level of oral hygiene in order for our restorations to
function and last longer in the healthier mouth. A visit
to the hygienist may be your first port of call to a healthier,
more beautiful mouth, and a happier and more confident
YOU! |
Hygienist Care
A registered dental hygienist
is specially trained to recognise and treat gum disease
and tooth decay.
Regular visits to the hygienist will help to prevent Periodontal
(gum) disease, bleeding gums and dental decay (caries).
Diet advice, Fluoride application, Fissure sealants and
Oral Hygiene instruction are all part of our programme
of prevention. Approximately half the population have
a problem with mouth odour - a problem that can be reduced
with regular visits to our dentists and hygienists. |
Oral Cancer
Examination |
|
Mouth cancer
is a malignant growth which can occur in any part
of the mouth, including the tongue, lips and throat.
Mouth cancers have a higher proportion of deaths
per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical
cancer or skin melanoma. The mortality rate is just
over 50%, despite treatment, with about 1,700 deaths
per year in the UK. This is because of late detection.

Protective Mouth Guards
 |
|
As
a dentist, it is always upsetting to treat a child
who has fractured or lost front teeth as a result
of a sporting accident. The consequences
will last for the rest of the child's life as, unlike
bone, teeth do not heal.
In most cases damage could have been prevented or
reduced had a suitable custom fitting mouth guard
been worn.
A mouth guard made by your dentist is made specially
to fit your mouth. This is more protective and stronger
than an over-the-counter model as available in most
sport stores. An incorrectly fitting mouth guard
is inefficient, hard to hold in place, and interferes
with proper breathing and speech. |
What are the advantages of wearing a custom-made
mouth guard?
Protects your teeth, tongue, cheeks and lips from
trauma. Lessens the risk of jaw fractures, and brain
concussion. However, trauma can still occur when
wearing a mouth guard which, if suspected, should
always be examined by your family dentist.
When should I get a mouth guard made for myself
or my child?
We recommend that your mouth guard is made before
embarking on any physical sport or pastime such
as Rugby, Football, Hockey, Skateboarding/Rollerblading,
Martial Arts/Self Defence, Gymnastics, Skiing, Lacrosse,
Squash, etc. |
